Planning applications

If you want to do any building work or alterations in Brent you may need planning permission from the council. It will only be granted if the work is in line with what is allowed in the borough.

Each application is judged against the policies in our unitary development plan (UDP). A new development plan, the local development framework, is currently being produced.

We have published a planning guide to help you through the application process.

Additionally, you can use the planning portal to determine if you need planning permission. Their interactive house facility is an easy way of determining what you need to apply for.

If you are making a major application, you may wish to use our pre-application advice service.

A Mayoral Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) charge comes into effect for applications decided 1 April 2012 onwards that meet the criteria and the charges have been set.  Guidance is available on the planning portal website and the form will need to be completed and included with application submissions.

How do I make a planning application?

Do it online. We can take payments and accept plans and accompanying documents electronically.

Alternatively, you can print off paper copies. If making an application, please check the details of the national and local planning application requirements.

Once your application is received, it will be submitted to a planning officer for determination.

More complex applications will be determined by Planning Committee. See our Customer Charter for more details of what to expect.
